Aurifil 50wt Cotton Quilting Thread NZ
The complete Direct Sewing Aurifil range
One versatile weight. Two ways to use colour.
Both products are Aurifil Cotton Mako 50wt, 2-ply thread on 1300m large orange spools. Your main decision is whether the stitch colour should stay consistent or change as you sew.
Colour-shopping note: each purchase supplies one 1300m spool in the selected shade. Product photos are a guide; screen settings, lighting and dye lots can affect how a colour appears.
Understanding thread weight
What does Aurifil 50wt mean?
Aurifil 50wt is a fine, strong 2-ply cotton thread. In this numbering system, a higher weight number describes a finer thread—so 50wt is finer than 40wt.
Its slim profile reduces thread bulk inside seam allowances, helping patchwork units press flatter. In quilting it creates definition without overwhelming the piecing.
A hardworking quilting weight
What is Aurifil 50wt best used for?
This is Aurifil’s most versatile cotton weight. Use it when you want a fine thread that supports accurate construction or a restrained, detailed stitch line.

How to choose an Aurifil colour
Do you want the thread to disappear, connect several fabrics or become part of the design? That answer is more useful than searching for one universally “perfect” shade.
Place the spool directly on the fabric, then unspool a short length so you see the thread rather than only the wound colour.
Variegated colour changes look different as stitch length, quilting density and starting position change.
Record the Aurifil shade code with your project notes so a favourite colour is easier to reorder.
A reliable starting setup
Needle, bobbin and tension
Aurifil recommends an 80/12 needle as a starting point for 50wt. The final choice still depends on the fabric, number of layers, technique and your machine.
From cotton fibre to finished spool
Aurifil cotton quality, made in Italy
Aurifil 50wt is made from 100% Egyptian long-staple cotton and manufactured in Milan, Italy. Its mercerised construction gives the thread its smooth profile and gentle lustre, while the iconic orange spool identifies Aurifil’s 50wt cotton range.

Aurifil 50wt FAQs
What Aurifil thread does Direct Sewing currently stock?
The current Aurifil collection is focused on 50wt cotton thread in the 1300m large orange spool. It includes one solid-colour product with 113 listed shades and one variegated product with 20 listed blends. Individual availability can change.
Is Aurifil 50wt good for quilt piecing?
Yes. Aurifil identifies 50wt as its ideal piecing weight because the thread is fine and strong, helping seams stay flat and non-bulky. Always test the stitch on your actual fabrics.
Can I machine quilt with Aurifil 50wt?
Yes. It is particularly useful for subtle machine or longarm quilting, dense background designs, whole-cloth work and micro quilting where a fine stitch line is preferred.
What is the difference between solid and variegated Aurifil thread?
A solid thread maintains one colour along its length. A variegated thread changes colour, creating tonal movement in visible stitching. The effect of a variegated shade changes with stitch length, design, quilting density and the point where you begin.
What needle should I use with Aurifil 50wt?
An 80/12 Microtex/Sharp, Universal, Quilting or Denim needle is Aurifil’s general domestic-machine recommendation for 50wt. Select the needle point for the fabric and technique, follow your machine manual and test before starting.
Can Aurifil 50wt be used in the bobbin?
Yes. Aurifil includes bobbin use among the applications for 50wt. Wind the bobbin correctly for your machine and test stitch balance with the chosen top thread and project layers.
Is a 1300m Aurifil spool a cone?
No. This collection contains the 1300m large orange spool. Aurifil’s much larger 5900m 50wt cone is a different format and is not the product supplied here.
How should I choose a thread colour online?
Use the four-digit shade code and product image as a starting point, but compare the physical spool with your fabric in natural light when colour accuracy matters. Screens, lighting and dye lots can change perceived colour.
Where can I buy Aurifil thread in New Zealand?
Shop Aurifil 50wt solid and variegated cotton quilting thread online from Direct Sewing with NZ-wide delivery, or visit our Henderson, Auckland store.
Choose the finish, then the shade
Quietly precise or full of movement?
Pick solid Aurifil 50wt for consistent colour and easy fabric matching, or choose variegated 50wt when changing colour should become part of the quilting design.
Thread and fabric colours can appear different across screens and lighting conditions. Product options and availability may change; check the individual product page before ordering. Always test needle, stitch, tension and care on a sample made from the actual project layers.
