Quilting supply buying guide
Which ruler and cutter should I start with?
For most patchwork, pair a clear acrylic ruler with a 45mm rotary cutter and a self-healing mat. Add a square ruler for blocks and a smaller cutter for curves or small pieces. Always match replacement blades to the cutter diameter and model.
What thread and needle do I need?
50wt cotton is a versatile choice for piecing; hand-quilting and decorative threads have different weights and handling. Use quilting-specific machine needles for multiple layers, and replace a blunt needle before troubleshooting tension.
Pins, clips or glue?
Use pins or clips where you need a temporary hold. Temporary fabric glue and basting sprays can stabilise quilt layers before stitching; check fabric, heat and wash instructions and test on a scrap first.
Which quilting foot fits?
Check your machine model and shank type before ordering. A quarter-inch foot helps piecing, while a walking foot manages layered quilting and a free-motion foot is designed for free-motion work.
