Machine dyeing
Dylon Machine Dye Pods for suitable cotton, linen and viscose. Use a front-loading machine; salt and fixing agents are included.
Hand dyeing
Dylon Hand Dye and Rit All-Purpose for suitable natural fibres. Choose liquid or powder and follow that product's dye-bath method.
Synthetic fabrics
Rit DyeMore for polyester, acrylic, acetate and blends. Requires a heated stovetop dye bath; a washing machine cannot maintain the heat needed.
Dye fixatives
Rit ColorStay helps reduce bleeding and fading on compatible fabrics. Especially useful after Rit dyeing cotton, linen, rayon or ramie.

Not sure which dye fits your fabric?
Start with the fibre label. Cotton, linen and viscose are good candidates for Dylon. Rit All-Purpose also offers methods for wool, silk and nylon. For polyester, acrylic, acetate or blends with more than 35% synthetic fibres, start with Rit DyeMore and check that your item can tolerate its heated method. Different fibres, stitching and trims can take colour differently. Always follow the product instructions and test a swatch where possible.

Do I need salt or a dye fixative?
Dylon Machine Dye Pods already contain salt and fixing agents. Dylon Hand Dye requires added salt. Rit additives depend on the fibre and method: follow the pack instructions. Rit ColorStay is a separate after-dye treatment for compatible fibres, including cotton, linen, rayon and ramie; it is not a universal treatment for every synthetic fabric. Follow the dye and fixative instructions for timing.
Restoring black, refreshing denim or trying tie-dye?
Explore the Rit Back to Black kit, Rit Back to Blue Denim kit and Tie-Dye Accessory Kit. Dye adds to the colour already in the fabric, so a pale starting colour gives the most flexibility. Results vary with fibre, original colour and fabric weight; dye may not hide bleach damage or stains.
