Quilting machine FAQs

What throat space do I need for quilting?

A larger throat space gives you more room to roll and support a quilt. Compact machines suit small projects and blocks; a wide-workspace model is more comfortable for bed quilts and dense free-motion work.

Do I need a dedicated quilting machine?

Not always. A capable computerised sewing machine with a quarter-inch foot, walking foot, free-motion foot and speed control can handle many patchwork and quilting projects. Dedicated straight-stitch or long-arm machines make sense when quilting is your main focus.

What is a walking foot used for?

A walking foot helps feed multiple quilt layers evenly, reducing shifting and puckering when you stitch in the ditch, quilt straight lines or work with bulky seams.

What is the difference between free-motion and straight-line quilting?

Straight-line quilting uses the machine feed for guided rows. Free-motion quilting lowers the feed dogs so you can move the quilt sandwich by hand for meanders, feathers and custom motifs.

Can a sewing and embroidery machine quilt?

Yes. Many sewing-and-embroidery models in this collection include quilting stitches, free-motion feet or large hoops. Choose one when you want quilting plus decorative or embroidery capability in the same machine.
